Try try...a triathlon! I have yet to find a marathon that tickles my fancy, so I've made the decision to train for a triathlon instead. I like the idea of mixing up my training. It was okay to run most days and have "cross-training" days, but I sure get bored easily! Now that we've started swimming and biking in addition to running, I am much happier! Now the debate: sprint triathlon or Olympic distance triathlon???
A sprint triathlon (distances may vary slightly) = 750m (.5mi) swim, 20k (12.4mi) bike, 5k (3.1mi) run
Olympic distance triathlon = 1.5km (.93mi) swim, 40k (24.8mi) bike, 10k (6.2mi) run
We've talked a lot about the challenge of an Olympic distance triathlon and that excites us. The concern is that we would not have enough time to train before race day. While a sprint triathlon would still be a challenge, I'm sure, it doesn't have the same status in my mind an Olympic distance. However, we would have plenty of time to train since we can already do the biking and the running and we'd really only need to add swimming into our current training. Votes anyone???
About swimming:
I am not a swimmer. In fact, before Monday I had never swum laps in my life. I have no idea the proper way to do the breast stroke or freestyle or the butterfly...I'm a very good doggy paddler! So far I have just been pretending I know what to do and its working okay. But I can tell that I'm wasting energy and that my form is completely inefficient...Oh well. For now it gets me from here to there. We are looking into adult swimming lessons to help us learn the strokes, but have yet to find anything that isn't meant for someone who is afraid they're going to drown (which may apply to Kyle who says, "I don't swim. I sink! I'm gonna drown!" every time we talk about getting in the pool!). I on the other hand, have always loved the water, and have no fear of finding myself at the bottom...maybe it helps that I have my built in flotations devices (two in the front, one in the back)...fat floats right? :) I have been enjoying every swim so far! And the most exciting thing for me: I'm faster than Kyle!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is better than me at EVERYTHING...so its kind of a big deal haha.
So that's what's new! Also, just for the record...I still fully intend to run a marathon as soon as I find one that looks good.
